The Challenge

When the pandemic was in 2020, the customer accelerated its seven-year plan to be implemented within one year, quickly shifting to a digital model to continue meeting the needs of families. With the rigorous efforts of the tenacious team, they successfully launched Singapore's biggest online baby fair in May 2020.

Research shows that consumers are likely to keep the behaviours they've adopted amid stay-at-home orders, such as more online shopping and fewer mall visits. Hence retailers can't afford to be in a wait-and-see mode. First, they need to reimagine their baseline requirements and then turn their attention to taking their customer experience to the next level, including a seamless experience between online and in-store experiences.

The Solution

To achieve the mission, the customer decided to migrate to AWS in 2020 to continue meeting the needs of families without the need to allocate a budget for purchasing physical servers, especially during the pandemic.

Westcon designed solutions for them to address compute needs, using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), which provides secure and resizable compute capacity for their fluctuating and varied workloads. Their team also uses Amazon RDS for MySQL, allowing them to set up and operate relational databases in the cloud quickly. The architecture gave the customer a more cost-effective alternative to running a dedicated Microsoft SQL Server database. Also, they leverage AWS Auto Scaling to scale resources on demand to manage peak loads during flash sales.

For security purposes, they use Amazon EventBridge to continuously monitor for malicious activity and unauthorised behaviour alongside AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) with multi-factor authentication to control user permission.  Moreover, they collect detailed logs that track API/user actions and enhance traceability when an error occurs on the application by leveraging services such as Amazon CloudWatch and AWS CloudTrail.

The Benefit

Besides improved website performance, the customer's team can work more effectively, leveraging the elasticity offered by AWS to allow them to scale out and scale in. The team achieved an average of 30 per cent improvement in latency for key performance indicators critical to the user experience.
